The Valor of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team
Hawaii’s contribution to the United States’ military efforts during World War II is a source of immense pride and deep reverence. Among the most notable is the story of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese Americans, known as Nisei. Many of these brave soldiers hailed from Hawaii, and their service and sacrifices have left an indelible mark on our history.
The Formation of the 442nd RCT
In the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans faced suspicion and discrimination. Despite this, many Nisei were determined to prove their loyalty to the United States. In 1943, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was formed, and young men from Hawaii and the mainland volunteered in large numbers. The motto of the 442nd was “Go for Broke,” reflecting their determination to give their all for their country. While we’re all aware of the bravery exhibited by Daniel Inouye during WW2 you may not have heard of other local war heroes that fought together.
The Story of Spark Matsunaga
Spark Matsunaga, born in Kauai, Hawaii, served with distinction in the 442nd RCT. He demonstrated remarkable bravery in battle and was instrumental in several key campaigns, including the liberation of Bruyères, France, and the rescue of the “Lost Battalion” in the Vosges Mountains. After the war, Matsunaga continued his dedication to public service, eventually serving as a U.S. Senator for Hawaii. He was a passionate advocate for veterans’ rights and helped to establish the U.S. Institute of Peace.
The Legacy of the 442nd
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team became one of the most decorated units in American military history. They fought valiantly in several key campaigns and earned numerous awards for their bravery and sacrifices. Their extraordinary heroism helped to change perceptions and paved the way for future generations of Japanese Americans.
